I love to play any kind of sport except for basketball! I really don't see a reason for the game but I'm biased. I was an assistant coach for the high school girls soccer team here in Beaver for 2 years but sadly my schooling and coaching did not fit together for very long. I am an amateur photographer (I basically do it so I can take lots of photos of my kids). I hate the cold weather but will happily go sledding with my kids.
My family
When I am all finished with school I plan on teaching both English and History. I really don't care what grade as long as it is 9th grade or higher. I am not a fan of middle school age kids. I remember my middle school years and I know Karma is ... well you know the saying! I had some awesome English teachers and they set a great example for me. I love the teenage years (thank goodness because I'm in for a lot with my 3 girls), I enjoy the challenge of working with moody students.
Literacy to me is the act of speaking and writing the English language. I am always correcting my kids on their speech (yep, they do roll their eyes at me and tell me "whatever"). I grew up in a school where speech was very important and that has made a huge impact on my life. I would definitely say literacy is a big part of my content area; English. I hope to teach future lawyers, doctors, businessmen and women, stay at home moms and dads and anybody else who wants to learn the importance of literacy.

Thanks for your posting. What a beautiful family you have!
ReplyDeleteYes, literacy is definitely a big part of English, as you stated. I think it also plays a large role in history...from analyzing primary source documents, to understanding the historical context behind a political cartoon, to comprehending a textbook. There are also so many fun and educational writing assignments that can be incorporated into history. If you look in your Buehl book, I thought one of the fun assignments was Dear Abby writing advice to Abe Lincoln about how he could address North Carolina's secession.
Thanks for your first posting, and I look forward to reading more as the semester progresses!
15 years that is amazing! My wife and I have been married for four years now and we have enjoyed every minute that we have been together. I too am an English education major, but with a psychology minor. High school is also my preferred age range, but if I was offered a job at a middle school I'm sure I wouldn't turn it down. I agree with your statement about literacy in an English classroom. It is our job to assist the students as they move forward with their education and make sure that they have all of the tools necessary to reach their goals once they are out of our classrooms.
ReplyDeleteEnglish is really hard for me...maybe I'll learn by reading your posts. I just love, love math!!
ReplyDeleteFirst off I think it is amazing that you are able to balance family and school. That is an amazing accomplishment. Second off English is an amazing I love that you were able to grow up where the english language is important. I grew up in a town where everyone's grammar was atrocious and that our teachers did not really emphasize that we must speak with good grammar. So when I moved to a different town it didn't take me long to realize that my english was terrible haha. I look forward reading more of your posts in the future.
ReplyDeleteYou are such a fun person, I'm sure you're going to be an awesome teacher. I think you have some real life experience that will help you with everything that comes at you- between all of the jobs and family stuff that you've kept in the air- you've really learned to balance a lot of stuff at once. (I realize I have some inside information from the last 4 years, but you are awesome and I hope you realize that!)
